LOUISVILLE, KY – The Louisville Metro Housing Authority awarded 14 public housing and Section 8 residents with $21,000 worth of college scholarships on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at 2:00PM at Masterson’s Restaurant (Nicholas Room).

Over the past 18 years, the traditional LMHA scholarship program has awarded 282 scholarships with a value of $1,002,890 to residents of public and assisted housing. The Louisville Housing Assistance Corporation (LHAC), a LMHA affiliate, funds the program.

“One of the keys to success in life – and in the workforce – is a commitment to life-long learning,” said Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson. “These recipients have demonstrated that commitment. They know that the best jobs of tomorrow require getting the best possible skills today. I applaud their tenacity and wish them continued success.”

Scholarship awards were also presented to 13 students who are participating in the LMHA’s Realizing Academic Potential (RAP) program. RAP identifies, targets, supports and provides financial assistance to youth, beginning in the ninth grade. Each year, if the student maintains acceptable grades, LMHA will contribute money to a scholarship fund established for that student. The RAP Scholarships are funded through a Youth Development Initiative through a Family Investment Center Grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“We are so proud of these students and we are happy to provide the financial assistance they need to pursue their dreams,” said Tim Barry, LMHA Executive Director. “We’ll do everything we can to help them achieve their goals.”
